The Nightlight Zone
A downloadable game
Part of the GMTK 2022 Game Jam.
Theme: Roll of the Dice
Our interpretation of the theme was to use the definition of the idiom: a risky attempt to do or achieve something.

Play as a young child out past your bedtime as you search for your missing comforts. Your teddy bear, blanket, favorite storybook, and other items are missing from the safe haven of your lamp-lit bedroom. Explore each corner of the house with your trusty flashlight before your battery runs out. Once in the dark, your imaginations and fears begin to run wild as you enter "The Nightlight Zone."

Things that were missed or didn't get finished that could have made it:
When the scream happens, the player should faint and be moved back to the last checkpoint - the last light they were in besides the flashlight. Then we could have used more time to test and iterate on the progression of the player's fear and how lights allay that fear.
When returning to the room with the needed item, you are supposed to be presented an option to go to bed and end the game, instead of immediately ending the game.
Upon game end, we wanted to show what items were collected, how long it took, how many lights were turned on, and how many batteries were used.
Then there's plenty more we feel could be built into the game in more than 48 hours.

No-commentary playthrough:
I thought there'd be a jump scare or two if I intentionally let the flashlight run out of batteries, so I recorded another playthrough to show with this one. Unfortunately, nothing much seemed to happen except a random scream and then a bit of music that intensified for a few moments before dying down again, so it didn't seem necessary to include.Thank you for taking the time to record a playthrough! Honestly didn't expect anyone to do that. Unfortunately, our scope was a bit too big for the game jam, so some mechanics got left out (for example, getting scared and fainting, UI, and safe zones). We're hoping to continue working on the project beyond the game jam and create the version we initially planned.
No problem! Good luck continuing the project!
